Noshu Kanehisa Katana, Tensho Period, 1570’s NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon, with Koshirae
$8,950

Features:

An exuberant late Muromachi katana from the prodigious Mino tradition. This is a work by Noshu Kanehisa who was active in the late 1500’s as part of the acclaimed school at Seki. The Seki swordsmiths were famed for making extremely sharp swords with a characteristic togari gunome hamon. However, they were also known to dabble in the Soshu-den tradition, carrying on the mantle of Shizu Kaneuji, the famous Masamune student and progenitor of the Mino tradition.

The blade features a strong sugata with wide mihaba balanced against a refined sori. The nakago is signed Noshu ju Kanehisa. The jigane is a coarse itame nagare hada that is imbued with intermittent mokume. Kanehisa aimed to copy Shizu with a Soshu-inspired gunome midare hamon that features a turbulent mix of complex nie formations. The hamon starts with overlapping gunome in a notare-ba, but evolves to a near hitatsura with prevalent muneyaki and yubashiri. The kissaki is near fully tempered as the hamon finishes in an ichimai boshi.

Along with high quality late Edo period handachi koshirae with shibuichi furniture.
